Labour MEP Daniel Attard recently met with Dr Mohammad Shtayyeh, who served as the Prime Minister of Palestine from 2019 to 2024. The purpose of the meeting was to engage in a discussion focused on the war between Israel and Palestine.

In a press release sent out today, the government states that “the exchange comes at a crucial moment, as the Palestinian people continue to endure what can only be described as genocide.”

During the meeting, Dr Shtayyeh praised Members of the European Parliament who consistently advocate for Palestinian rights. He emphasised that recognising the state of Palestine is not intended as a punitive measure against Israel, but rather as an acknowledgment of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

The former Prime Minister of Palestine also highlighted the significant steps taken by several EU Member States, including Malta, toward formal recognition of Palestine. He stressed that such recognition carries profound meaning beyond symbolism, inspiring hope among Palestinians.

Commenting on the meeting with Dr Shtayyeh, Attard stated that “it is nothing short of outrageous and indefensible that to this day, while thousands of women, children and innocent civilians are being killed and buried under the rubble of their homes, the European Union has not yet found the resolve to condemn the Israeli Government, which continues to commit crimes against humanity.”
