Floriana Deputy Mayor Unveils Locality Regeneration Plan

Floriana Deputy Mayor Unveils Locality Regeneration Plan
Feb 19 2025 Share

Floriana PN Deputy Mayor James Aaron Ellul has introduced the Floriana Regeneration Plan, a policy document addressing challenges such as population decline, urban deterioration, and infrastructure limitations.

The plan, which received unanimous approval from both Labour and independent councillors, is set to be discussed further by the Local Council.

Ellul stressed the importance of resident consultation, stating that the Council will engage with the community to ensure the plan reflects their needs. Based on extensive research and public input, the plan aims to preserve and revitalise Floriana’s identity.

A major issue identified is the neglect of key areas like Triq Sant’Anna, where aging infrastructure and abandoned commercial spaces affect the town’s vitality. While pedestrianisation and beautification could enhance the area, the plan argues that a broader economic and social strategy is essential for sustainable regeneration.

The document also advocates for better use of public spaces, proposing the transformation of Jubilee Grove into a national park to serve as a recreational and cultural hub. Other recommendations include financial incentives for property buyers, restoration grants, and improved public transport connectivity.

A wider Grand Harbour regeneration strategy is proposed, encouraging collaboration with Valletta, Senglea, Vittoriosa, and Cospicua to create a thriving residential and commercial hub.

Overall, the plan prioritises sustainability, conservation, and community involvement, ensuring Floriana’s long-term development while maintaining its rich cultural heritage.
