Forget the usual sightseeing tours—Cottonera has just raised the bar with a brand-new walking trail that brings Malta’s water heritage to life!

The Alter Aqua Reservoir Trail invites you to uncover the secrets of 12 historical stops in Birgu, where centuries-old water reservoirs lie hidden beneath your feet, waiting to tell their story.

This one-of-a-kind trail is an experience designed to be as informative as it is fun. Each stop along the route unveils reservoirs dating back to the 16th century, showcasing their historical role in water storage, flood control, and maritime trade.

These once-overlooked structures were essential for the survival of communities in Cottonera during times when access to water was a matter of life and death. The reservoirs are not just relics of the past but a testament to how Malta’s water management systems inspired modern sustainability practices.

The trail was developed by the Alter Aqua project, which is funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation and led by GWP-Med in collaboration with the Energy and Water Agency, while the University of Malta and local NGO Il-Ġibjun made important contributions.

Using a specially designed web application, visitors can guide themselves through this 60-minute journey, learning about the architectural ingenuity of the reservoirs, their significance during the time of the Knights of St. John and the British, and their role in maritime activities.

The app also highlights how these ancient systems are being repurposed for sustainable water use today.

One standout stop is Victory Square in Birgu, where a reservoir previously restored through the Alter Aqua project now supplies harvested rainwater to the municipal water truck for watering greenery in the area.

This fusion of historical preservation and practical modern use highlights how Malta’s heritage can inspire sustainable solutions for the future.

Whether you’re a history buff, a casual walker, or someone just looking for a unique way to explore Malta, the Alter Aqua Reservoir Trail offers something for everyone.

It’s an immersive, self-paced experience where you can dive into Malta’s water heritage while taking in the charm of Cottonera’s streets and architecture.
