Keep An Eye Out For This ‘English Football Shirt’ Jellyfish

Environment
Marine biologist shared a post raising awareness about this month’s jellyfish, the cigar jellyfish (Olindias phosphorica).
This species normally shows up in July in sandy bays with seagrass patches, notably Għadira (Mellieħa Bay) and St Thomas Bay.
The species, Deidun quipped, can be distinguished through its red cross-like marking similar to an English national football team shirt. They are, however, largely transparent in the water.
This species inflicts a mild sting and hence there is no need for panic attacks. Stings can be best treated through the application of vinegar and cold packs (not freshwater).
