June 2025 Was 2.3°C Hotter Than Usual: First Heat Wave Of The Year

June 2025 was notably warmer and sunnier than average in Malta, marking the arrival of the first heatwave of the summer season.
The Malta Meteorological Office reported a mean air temperature of 26.3°C for June, well above the climatic norm of 24.2°C. The highest temperature reached 35.6°C on 9 June, while the coolest day saw temperatures drop to 15.8°C on 1 June.
Between 24 and 27 June, Malta experienced its first heatwave of the year, with daily maximum temperatures exceeding the monthly norm by more than 5°C for four consecutive days. Temperatures during this period peaked at 35.3°C on 25 June.
Sea temperatures also rose, with the mean sea surface temperature reaching 25.1°C, compared to the usual 22.0°C.
Sunshine hours were well above average, with June recording 374.3 hours of bright sunshine, roughly 40 hours more than the norm.
On average, residents enjoyed 12.5 hours of sunshine daily, about 1.3 hours longer than usual. The sunniest day was 2 June with 13.4 hours of sunshine, while the dullest was 20 June with 8.1 hours.
