Festivals Malta Launches The Program For Notte Bianca 2023

Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici launched the programme for Notte Bianca 2023, which will take place on Saturday 7th October. Organised by Festivals Malta, Notte Bianca offers a diversified show of performative and visual art, with the participation of various local and international artists.

Minister Bonnici explained that this year we will have over 60 activities during the Notte Bianca, featuring more than 250 artists, the majority of whom are local.

Dr Bonnici elaborated on the significance of the Notte Bianca for the cultural sector. He stated: “Notte Bianca represents a continuous and direct investment in the cultural sector, which is evolving to make this platform more accessible to both our creatives and the Maltese society as a whole.”

Festivals Malta Chairman Aaron Zahra explained how through Notte Bianca, Valletta is transformed into a cultural evening filled to the brim with music, theatre, dance and installations of the highest calibre, as well as educational activities for children and for the whole family.

“Notte Bianca succeeds in promoting Malta as a cultural destination by offering entertaining and educational events with artistic value to our audiences,” he said. Mr Zahra also explained that this year Festivals Malta has implemented an interactive map on the festival’s website in order to facilitate the audience’s process of finding specific events.

“Each year, Festivals Malta is working to not only make Notte Bianca more accessible and organised, but also to continue raising the bar so that the public can enjoy our festivals in the best way possible,” he explaiend.

The Festivals Malta CEO Frans Agius said: “Through Notte Bianca, Valletta turns into a festival of colors, where art and culture reign and where local and international artists alike showcase their talents at every corner of our Capital City. Standing out at this year’s Notte Bianca are the various collaborations we have with state entities, NGOs, and other organisations that are all giving their contribution through original productions with various social and informative themes.”

Notte Bianca’s Artistic Director Antoine Farrugia said: “I am proud to say that this year we have over 60 varied projects categorised in seven artistic routes. Our artists have prepared a spectacular show for our audiences.”

He also announced that this year’s main stage artists will be AIDAN, Ivan Grech & Band, and the popular Italian band Le Vibrazioni.

“Surely everyone who will visit Notte Bianca will find a project to their liking and I encourage families and lovers of arts, culture, and music to come and celebrate with us,” he said.

Man With Criminal Record Returned to Nigeria by Malta Police Force

Towards the end of last week, the Malta Police Force’s Immigration Section conducted another successful operation in removing and returning an individual with a criminal past to their country of origin in Nigeria.

In a report issued by The Malta Police Force, it was revealed that the individual was granted consecutive prison sentences with regards to drug importation and lightly injuring a correctional officer.

Upon orders of return, the individual was deported and escorted under arrest from Malta to Nigeria via flight. For this operation, the Police were assisted by Detention Services. Apart from being returned, an order was placed for the individual to never return to Malta.

This operation is the latest in a string of operations being conducted in the past months where the Immigration Office returned individuals who could not stay in Malta back to their country, including those with prison sentences after being found guilty in Court.

The Police Corp thanked the Immigration section whilst also pledging to remain vigilant with those conducted criminal acts in Malta and conducting operations such as this whenever needed.

Recent data published by the Ministry for Finance has revealed that Malta’s population has continued to grow, with the population of St. Paul’s Bay only being 5,000 less than all of Gozo.

The 2021 Census reportedly found that the population of St. Paul’s Bay doubled between 2011 and 2021 to reach over 32,000. Towards the beginning of 2023, Malta’s population stood at 542,051.

Nowadays, the St. Paul’s Bay population stands at 35,419, which means that the total amount has increased by 4,000 in a period of one year.

The localities with the highest populations remained Birkirkara with 27,555, Mosta with 24,290 and Sliema with 21,108. The smallest localities remained Imdina, which registered an increase of 3 people, with Għasri and San Lawrenz in Gozo standing at respective populations of 517 and 815.
