Italy Remains Favourite Destination For Maltese In 2025

Outbound tourism in the second quarter of 2025 reached an estimated total of 208,988 tourists, marking an increase of 11.6% compared to the same period in 2024.
The total number of nights spent rose by 23.9%, reaching 1,493,684 nights.
Between April and June 2025, the majority of outbound trips were taken for holiday purposes, amounting to 135,788, while 46,813 trips were made to visit friends and relatives.
Tourists aged between 25 and 44 years made up the largest share at 44.6%, followed by those aged 45 to 64 at 31.1%.

Trips to both EU and non-EU destinations increased, with EU trips up by 10.8% and non-EU trips rising by 14.1%. Italy remained the top destination, accounting for 37.9% of all outbound trips.
Of the 1.5 million guest nights recorded, 51.6% were spent in non-rented accommodation. The average stay per tourist was 7.1 nights.
Estimated expenditure for the quarter totalled €206.3 million, with an average spend of €987 per person.
From January to June 2025, total outbound trips reached 390,391, an increase of 6.1% compared to 2024.
Total nights spent rose by 16.8%, amounting to 2.8 million. Estimated expenditure by residents totalled €377.5 million, representing a 14.5% rise over the same period in 2024.
