Italian Officers Join Local Police For Summer Period Rotations

In line with a cooperation agreement signed in December 2024 between the Italian Polizia di Stato and the Malta Police Force, joint patrols have commenced in key tourist areas across Malta.
This initiative aims to enhance public safety, particularly in locations frequently visited by Italian-speaking tourists.
Eight Italian officers will participate across two rotations during the summer period, operating in Valletta and St Julian’s alongside Maltese officers.
The officers, who are in uniform but unarmed and without executive powers, will assist with preventative patrols and public order duties, as well as support Italian nationals on the island.
This collaboration is part of a broader bilateral security framework between Italy and Malta and is coordinated by the International Police Cooperation Services (SCIP) and the Italian Embassy in Malta.
The initiative marks the first of its kind in Malta, with plans to potentially continue in future summer seasons. The participating Italian officers, who range from sergeants to inspectors, bring with them significant operational experience and strong linguistic skills to aid communication with both Maltese colleagues and the public.
Their duties include facilitating information exchange about Italian tourists, assisting communication between citizens and authorities, and strengthening cooperation between the two forces.
The initiative forms part of the Malta Police Force’s Transformation Strategy 2020–2025, which emphasises international cooperation and community policing.
It reflects a shared commitment to the rule of law, public protection, and international collaboration, and builds on Malta’s ongoing efforts in global policing initiatives, including previous participation in patrols in France.
