Iconic St. Anne Street Reimagined as Family-Friendly Promenade

Floriana’s iconic St. Anne Street is set to be transformed into a family-friendly, nature-first promenade thanks to Soluzzjoni, a Maltese community platform that promotes practical solutions for local challenges ranging from traffic to environmental issues.
Plans to make the street safer and more pedestrian-friendly have been in development for some time.
Project Green recently proposed the introduction of pedestrian platforms extending from the arches onto the first lane of the road.
These platforms, designed for the side of the street leading to Valletta, could feature planters and seating areas, creating spaces for people to gather and enjoy the surroundings.
The proposed stretch runs in front of the three blocks located between the Lion Monument and Pjazza Papa Giovanni.
Earlier proposals from the government suggested turning the entire street into a garden with traffic rerouted underground. However, Project Green deemed this unfeasible following archaeological and geotechnical studies.
Soluzzjoni highlighted the project on social media, encouraging a “people-first” approach: “Imagine St. Anne Street as a tree-lined promenade where families stroll safely, children cycle freely, and cafés thrive under cool Mediterranean shade. Small, staged changes can bring big wins for Floriana: safer crossings for families and elders, cooler shade from carob, olive, and tamarisk trees, cleaner air, calmer noise, and more life for local shops.”
