Here’s What the Colours on the Maltese Flag Really Mean

You have seen it waving in the wind, flying high on buildings and boats, but have you ever stopped to ask: what do the colours on the Maltese flag actually mean?
Let’s break it down!
The flag of Malta is white and red, with a special cross in the top left corner. It might look simple, but it tells a big story about bravery, history and honour.
First, the colours:
Legend says the red and white colours came from the Knights of St John, a powerful group who ruled Malta hundreds of years ago. Their emblem was a red flag with a white cross, and it became part of Malta’s identity.
Now let’s talk about that grey cross in the corner. That is called the George Cross, and it was given to the entire Maltese people by King George VI of the United Kingdom in 1942. Why? Because during World War II, Malta was bombed almost every day, but the people never gave up. They showed such bravery that the king awarded them the George Cross – a medal usually given to individuals for great courage!
The cross was added to the flag to remind everyone how strong and united the Maltese people were during one of the toughest times in history.
So when you see the Maltese flag, you are not just looking at colours. You are looking at a symbol of courage, history and pride that tells the story of an island that always stands tall.
