In July, the number of heat-related admissions at Mater Dei hospital increased tenfold compared to the previous year, as per health data reported by Times of Malta.
In June and July 2022, three and nine patients were respectively admitted with heat-related conditions.
However, during the same months in the current year, the numbers surged to five and 94 patients, experiencing similar heat-related symptoms.
Fortunately, no deaths linked to dehydration or hyperthermia were reported in June 2022 and June 2023. Yet, in July 2022, two deaths occurred, while a concerning 21 deaths were recorded in July 2023, with the National Mortality Register attributing them to dehydration or hyperthermia.
These fatalities happened amid a severe heatwave, compounded by prolonged power cuts in some regions. On July 24, the temperature reached a record 42.7°C, with a heat index of 44°C according to the Met Office.
Throughout the final days of July, health authorities consistently urged people to take necessary precautions and safeguard themselves from the adverse effects of the extreme heat.
