The Ministry for Health and Active Ageing has introduced a new plan to tackle periods of extreme heat in Malta. This initiative includes early warning systems, a public awareness campaign, and a coordinated response by agencies within the Ministry’s remit. In collaboration with the Meteorological Office, an early alert system will notify the public of expected high temperatures. These warnings will be delivered via text messages and will include practical advice to help people stay safe during heatwaves.

A public awareness campaign has also been launched to educate people about the dangers of extreme heat. It offers simple guidance such as staying well hydrated, avoiding physical exertion during the hottest hours of the day, and keeping out of direct sunlight wherever possible.

For those most at risk, particularly people with certain medical conditions, the Ministry has opened Day Centres in various locations across Malta. These centres provide a safe, cool environment and are coordinated by the Primary Care Support Centre.

Minister Jo Etienne Abela expressed gratitude to all the professionals who contributed to the plan and to telecom providers who agreed to distribute personalised messages across Malta and Gozo. He emphasised that extreme heat can seriously damage vital organs such as the heart, kidneys, and brain. The Ministry’s efforts aim to prevent unnecessary suffering or loss of life. For further support, individuals can call 21231231. In an emergency, they should contact 1400 or 112.
