Ħamrun Spartans moved a step closer to a landmark place in the group stage after defeating FC RFS 1-0 in the Play-Off Round first leg at the National Stadium.

With Saliou Thioune’s second-half goal, Ħamrun Spartans took a huge step towards making history in the UEFA Conference League.

Despite pre-match concerns over the poor state of the Ta’ Qali pitch, Giacomo Modica’s side delivered a disciplined performance. They absorbed early pressure from the Latvians, who threatened on the counter, before gradually seizing control of the game.

Thioune’s decisive strike midway through the second half proved enough, as the Spartans managed the closing stages with maturity. Substitutes Matias Garcia and Sven Xerri added fresh energy to ensure the narrow but priceless advantage was preserved.

The tie now heads to Riga next week, where Ħamrun stand just one match away from becoming the first Maltese club to reach the group stage of a UEFA competition.
