Ħamrun Spartans suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv, conceding a last-minute goal in a tightly contested UEFA Europa League qualifier.

Despite being considered underdogs, Ħamrun dominated large spells of the match, creating numerous clear-cut chances in both halves.

However, their lack of clinical finishing proved costly as they failed to extend their lead when on top.

Their efforts were finally rewarded in the 71st minute, when Ivorian forward N’Dri Philippe Koffi calmly converted a penalty, giving the Spartans a deserved lead.

The momentum seemed firmly in their favour, but Maccabi Tel Aviv equalised just eight minutes later from a well-worked corner, shifting the tide of the match.

As the game appeared to be heading for a draw, the Israeli side struck in the dying moments, with Elad Madmon snatching a late winner against the run of play.

The dramatic ending left the Maltese champions and their fans devastated after what had been an inspired and determined performance.
