This Ancient Maltese Temple Is Older Than the Pyramids – And No One Knows Why It Was Built

Deep under the ground, hidden in the middle of a quiet Maltese town, lies a place so old and mysterious that even scientists scratch their heads. It’s called the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, and it’s older than the pyramids of Egypt!
Yes, you read that right. The Hypogeum was built around 4000 BC, which means it’s over 6,000 years old. That’s before the Great Pyramid of Giza and even before Stonehenge. But here’s the weird part, no one knows exactly why it was built.
The Hypogeum is an underground temple carved right into the rock. It has chambers, passageways and rooms on three different levels. People believe it was used as a burial site and a sacred place for strange rituals. Over 7,000 skeletons were found inside, most of them in one chamber now called the Holy of Holies.
Even stranger, one of the rooms creates a creepy echo. If you speak in it, your voice bounces around the walls in a way that can be felt through your bones. Some people think it was made on purpose to sound magical during ceremonies.
But here’s the big mystery, how did people thousands of years ago cut through stone with no metal tools? And why go underground when building above would be easier? Nobody knows for sure.
The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and only a few visitors are allowed in each day to protect it. It’s one of the most puzzling ancient places in the world, and it’s right there under Malta’s feet.
