Despite playing with a ten-man squad, Balzan emerged victorious with an exceptional showing in extra time against NK Domzale, with Andre Prates netting a heroic 94-minute goal.
The true drama came, however, during Gzira United’s match against Irish side Glentoran F.C., which saw a record-breaking 28-penalty shootout after a last-minute equaliser from Glentoran. The shootout did not only surpass the 2020/2021 shootout between Shamrock Rovers and Ilves to become European football’s longest ever, but made international headlines for one particular moment.
The point which caught Maltese fans, commentators and even Gzira United’s goalkeeper off guard was when Glentoran’s Jay Donnelly took a hopeful shot to keep the Irish side in the game. Despite initially catching the shot, Gzira goalkeeper David Cassar celebrated too early, all while the ball managed to make it into the net via rebound.
