Gozo Channel is back in action following severe weather

Following this weekend’s intense weather, the Gozo Channel had to be halted to ensure the safety of passengers and the crew. Now that the weather has cleared, Gozo Channel Operations Limited announced that the ships are once again in operation at the Ċirkewwa South Quay.

Meanwhile, to ensure that anyone stuck in Malta or Gozo due to the weather could be safe, the government announced that they would be able to stay at a hotel and would be reimbursed for their stay.

Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri explained on social media that every worker that got stuck in Malta can spend a night at a hotel in the area and should keep the receipt.

‘We are informed that the Riviera Hotel and Paradise Hotel have available rooms and are aware of the arrangement’ he explained. ‘The reimbursement will come into effect once again via the App MyGozo.’

On his part, Minister for Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela explained that Gozitan staff working night duty at care homes will also not have to cross the channel in the weather.

The initiative was well received by many, especially those who had to stay either in Malta or Gozo due to the severe weather conditions.

A brief recap of yesterday’s storm… and what’s coming

Malta was battered by heavy rain, Force 9 winds and even some damage inducing flooding over the weekend.

As many found shelter indoors, others managed to get a snippet of what the storm hailing from the northeast was doing to the islands.

Boats in Marsascala were filmed being pulled to shore whilst others recorded scenes of cars ploughing through depths of water and rain.

The worst of the storm was registered in the afternoon between 1400 and 1700hrs, with the forecast resulting in an orange warning by the Malta International Airport weather reporting facility.

And this could be the beginning of a pattern for this week as similar forecasts have been issued for the rest of the week. This week is set to colder and wetter than usual, with moderate winds and possible isolated rain throughout out.

Roberta Metsola meets U2’s Bono for a good cause

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola has recently launched the ‘Generators of Hope’ campaign to help Ukraine with power generators in yet another push by the Maltese MEP and the EU, to help those suffering from the war.

Posting on her socials, Roberta Metsola described U2’s Bono as “the man who first shook the world in concerts and then into action.” She explained that Bono is a global campaigner for the newly established #GeneratorsofHope initiative for Ukraine.

The campaign calls on cities to donate power generators and transformers to help Ukrainians get through the harsh winter ahead.

These generators will help to keep essential facilities in the country running, providing energy to hospitals, schools, water supply facilities, relief centres, shelters, phone masts and more.

As a result of Russia’s war against Ukraine more than half of Ukraine’s electricity network has been damaged or destroyed, leaving millions of Ukrainians without electricity.

Storm hitting Malta on Tuesday to be even bigger than last weekend’s

It seems that Sunday will not be the last time Malta will have to endure stormy weather conditions, with local weather page ‘Aġġornament tat-Temp’ forecasting an even bigger storm on Tuesday.

On Sunday, the Maltese Islands were hit with a spell of strong winds, particularly between 1pm and 6.30pm, with the strongest wind being registered at gale force 9.

Today’s chance of rain currently stands at 45% with an even bigger storm expected to sweep the Maltese Islands on Tuesday as a cold front continues to hit the country. Temperatures are expected to reach highs 17°C and lows of 13°C.

Meanwhile, another weather page ‘It-Temp Madwarna’ has suggested that today will be relatively clear, with a storm to hit the country late at night as chance of rain stands at 80%.

Malta’s Meteorological Office has corroborated such claims, with reports of ‘Mainly Cloudy‘ weather on Monday and ‘Thundery Showers‘ on Tuesday.
