Government Extends Public Consultation On ‘Vision Malta 2050’ Following Opposition Request
Local

The Government has welcomed the Opposition’s request for a consultation meeting and announced an extension of the public consultation period on Vision Malta 2050 until the end of October.

Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, Silvio Schembri, emphasised the importance of creating a vision that reflects the entire nation. He said, “Vision Malta 2050 is a unique and historic opportunity, allowing our country to have a clear policy framework and direction that goes beyond a five-year political cycle. The initiative has already received positive feedback from numerous national entities and personalities, including the President of the Republic and the Archbishop of Malta.”

The Government’s long-term vision has attracted significant public interest over the summer, through dozens of consultation meetings and initiatives designed to gather citizens’ ideas for Malta in 2050. The process, which began in October 2024 with support from an international consultancy, included consultations with social partners, public entities, private sector representatives, focus groups, surveys, and even international opinions.

In January, the Government held a three-day convention with Maltese entrepreneurs to develop a holistic starting point for the vision. The consultation document was launched in April at a meeting in the Cittadella in Gozo, opening a wider public consultation. Summer initiatives such as ‘Oħlom Oħloq’, which involved a dedicated campaign vehicle visiting various events, also contributed to gathering ideas from citizens of all ages.

Permanent Secretary for the Coordination and Implementation of Vision, Ronald Mizzi, highlighted the importance of engaging the public, “During the summer, we met with the public through events and social media, maintaining a steady pace of meetings with partners, entities, and citizens of all ages. We listened to hopes and visions for Malta in 2050, from children and young people to older generations. Yet, we know there is more to hear, which is why the consultation period will be extended until the end of October.”

The Vision Implementation Unit, established within the Office of the Prime Minister, has already collected over 2,000 submissions and ideas.

Colonel Mark Mallia, Head of Secretariat, said,“Implementation will be key. Every measure will have KPIs visible to the public in real time, allowing citizens to track progress and understand the impact of each initiative. Policies will be assigned, and implementation will begin so that in the coming months and years, this vision for a better Malta can be realised.”
