Government Boosts Efforts To Stop Illegal Fishing

The Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights continues its strong efforts against illegal fishing, working year-round and not just during the bluefin tuna season.
Thanks to Malta’s persistent advocacy, the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) has increased patrols in the Mediterranean, with the Ocean Sentinel vessel currently inspecting areas near Sicily known for illegal fishing.
In June, European Commissioner Costas Kadis visited Malta to meet fishermen and better understand their challenges. Malta is also urging European institutions to reconsider the bluefin tuna season start date, citing climate change impacts, though any changes must follow proper legislative processes.
Following reports of illegal fishing on 1 August, EFCA acted quickly, convening a working group and deploying inspections in key areas.
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, Anton Refalo said, “We remain committed to protecting Maltese fishermen and ensuring sustainable fishing practices for the future.”
Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said added, “With European support, Malta will continue to defend our fishing communities and ensure our seas are protected for generations to come.”
The Ministry encourages fishermen to report illegal activity with videos and information to help strengthen enforcement efforts.
