An open space of over 5,200 square meters in the center of Qrendi, known as Ġnien tal-Kmand, has officially been transferred to the responsibility of the Qrendi Local Council following a devolution agreement signed with the Lands Authority.

This Garden in Qrendi was built in the early 19th century by Civil Commissioner Sir Alexander Ball. Originally, it served as an agricultural experimentation center where new crops like potatoes were introduced, later becoming a key product associated with Qrendi.

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli and the Mayor of Qrendi, David Schembri announced the agreement during a visit on the site.

Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said, “Spaces like Ġnien tal-Kmand, which also have historical value, should be actively used by the community. As a government, we remain committed to improving the quality of life for people and ensuring that these spaces are managed in the best way for the benefit of residents.”

Mayor David Schembri welcomed the partnership, stating that the local council will restore and maintain the garden to make it more accessible and suitable
