‘Building on these improvements, the work being done also highlights the Corporation’s pioneering role in reducing the use of plastic.’

It was revealed that, through ongoing investments, chloride levels in tap water have already been reduced by 30%.

Further reductions of 37% are planned, along with additional improvements aimed at standardising the taste of tap water, which is already recognised globally for its safety and high quality.

Meanwhile, Minister Miriam Dalli highlighted Malta’s water security progress at the National Water Conference, focusing on non-conventional water resources.

She emphasised that the country’s National Water Policy has driven innovation and strategic foresight, ensuring water resilience.

Manuel Sapiano, CEO of the Energy and Water Agency, stressed the need for ongoing development in the water sector, especially amid climate change, while also noting efforts to improve water use efficiency and diversify supply resources.

This week, the Malta School Games, an inter-school sports competition, were launched by Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research, and Innovation, Clifton Grima, together with Principal Permanent Secretary Tony Sultana and Permanent Secretary Matthew Vella.

This initiative aims to enhance student well-being by increasing physical activity in schools.

Currently, five colleges, with over 500 classes, are participating in a pilot project to extend the time students spend on physical activities.

This program, which began in the 2022–2023 academic year, is set to be implemented in all colleges within two years. Its goal is to help students adopt an active lifestyle from a young age.

The games align with the National Education Strategy 2024–2030, which focuses on increasing both the time and quality of physical education.

Over 2,500 students from 28 schools across Malta and Gozo are participating in the games, competing in a range of sports including Athletics, Swimming, Basketball, Football, Netball, and Rugby.

Students from Primary and Secondary levels, representing State, Independent, and Church schools, are all involved.

Minister Grima highlighted the Olympic values of hope, unity, and perseverance and encouraged young athletes to pursue their future aspirations. He thanked all involved in organising the games and promoting school sports.
