Fun Facts You Might Not Know About: Żejtun!
Local

Żejtun is a big town in the south of Malta, and it is full of life, colour, and really interesting stories. It might look like just another quiet place with narrow streets and old buildings, but there is much more to it than meets the eye. First of all, the name Żejtun comes from the Arabic word zaytun, which means olive. That is because the area used to be filled with olive trees, and even today, some of them are hundreds of years old! The town still celebrates its olive-growing history with an annual festival called Festa Żejt, where you can taste fresh olive oil, watch folk dancing and try delicious traditional food.

Żejtun is one of the oldest towns in Malta. During Roman times, it was already a busy area. In fact, bits of ancient Roman buildings and tombs have been found here. The town has always been important, especially in farming, and it is still known for growing fruit and vegetables. That is probably where the nickname Żejtun Ħelu comes from, meaning Sweet Żejtun. Some say it is because of the sweet produce, and others say it is because the people are so friendly!

One of the main landmarks is the Church of St Catherine of Alexandria, a massive baroque-style church in the heart of Żejtun. It is one of the most beautiful churches in Malta, and it lights up beautifully during the town’s festa in June. There are band marches, colourful lights, statues and, of course, loud fireworks. Żejtun’s festa is one of the most joyful in the south.

Did you know that Żejtun once helped defend Malta from pirates? The area was attacked during the Great Siege of 1565, and locals fought to protect their homes. Even today, some parts of the town have watchtowers and old defensive buildings that remind us of those dangerous times.

Żejtun is also known for its traditional houses with beautiful wooden balconies, colourful doors and decorative stone carvings. Walking through its winding streets feels like stepping back in time. It is the kind of place where neighbours chat across balconies and where nannas still sweep the doorstep every morning.

So if you have never been to Żejtun, it is time to explore. With its olive oil festivals, sweet traditions and proud history, this southern gem is more than worth the visit!
