Fun Facts You Might Not Know About Xlendi
Local

Welcome to Xlendi, a picturesque seaside village located on the island of Gozo. Known for its beautiful bay, dramatic cliffs, and fascinating history, Xlendi offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. From ancient shipwrecks to pirate lookout towers, there is plenty to discover in this coastal gem.

Named After a Sunken Ship

The name “Xlendi” comes from a Byzantine ship called Shilandi that sank near the bay. Divers discovered the wreck in the 1960s. It’s a fascinating connection to the ancient past!A Bay Made for Swimming and Snorkelling

Xlendi Bay used to have sand but is now mostly pebbles. The left side of the bay has flat rocks perfect for diving into the deep, clear water. The shallow, calm water makes it ideal for families and fun swims!

Xlendi Tower

Perched above the bay is Xlendi Tower, built in 1650 by the Knights of St John to guard against pirate attacks. It still stands today and is being carefully restored.

Cliffs, Caves, and Coastal Trails

The cliffs around Xlendi are perfect for walking and exploring. One of the best walks leads to Caroline’s Cave, a secret spot once used by a noble lady who loved to swim unseen. There’s also Catherine of Siena Cave nearby, known for its striking blue water.

History Beneath Xlendi

Roman and Punic tombs have been found in the cliffs and valley near Xlendi. The bay sheltered ancient boats and stored amphoras (old pottery containers) on the seabed.

Home to Shearwaters

The coastline from Xlendi Bay to Wardija Point is an Important Bird Area. It supports hundreds of breeding seabirds like Cory’s shearwaters and the vulnerable yelkouan shearwaters, making it vital for wildlife.

Village Festivals and Gostra Fun

Each year in August Xlendi celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The day includes water games, a gostra (a pole over the sea where people try to grab a flag!), processions, music, and fireworks. It’s a splash of local excitement!
