Fun Facts You Might Not Know About: Mosta!
Local

Mosta is one of the most popular and lively towns in Malta, sitting right in the centre of the island. It is best known for its huge church, the Rotunda of Mosta, which has one of the largest unsupported domes in the world. The dome is 37 metres wide and can be seen from miles away. But what really makes it famous is the miracle bomb story. In 1942, during World War II, a German bomb crashed through the dome while people were at Mass. It landed in the church but never exploded. Everyone inside survived, and the bomb (or a replica of it) is still kept on display in the sacristy.

Mosta is not just about the dome, though. It is a town full of life, especially during its annual festa in August. The streets are filled with decorations, loud band marches, and some of the best fireworks shows in Malta. Locals take festa seriously, and Mosta’s celebrations are among the biggest on the island. The town also has a long history, with ancient sites like the Ta’ Bistra Catacombs, which are Roman-era underground burial chambers that you can visit today.

If you love food, Mosta is a paradise. It is famous for its pastizzi; the flakiest, hottest ones straight from local favourites. People come from all over the island for a bite. Mosta is also home to great bakeries, snack bars and traditional sweet shops.

Another cool thing about Mosta is its location. Because it is in the centre of Malta, it connects easily to places like Mdina, Rabat, Naxxar and even Valletta by bus. In fact, the town name “Mosta” is thought to come from the Arabic word Musta, meaning “central” or “middle”.

And there is more. During World War II, Mosta had underground air raid shelters carved into the rock to keep people safe from bombs. You can still visit these tunnels today and see how people lived during wartime.

So if you thought Mosta was just the town with the big dome, think again! It is a place full of stories, traditions, tasty food and surprises waiting around every corner.
