Located in northern Malta, Mellieħa is a delightful town known for its stunning natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage. It is one of the island’s largest localities and a popular destination for both tourists and locals.
Mellieħa is famous for Għadira Bay, Malta’s largest sandy beach, offering safe, shallow waters.
Close by, visitors can explore quieter beaches like Paradise Bay and the striking Anchor Bay, home to the colourful Popeye Village a former film set turned family attraction.
The town’s history dates back centuries, with notable landmarks such as St. Agatha’s Tower (the Red Tower), built in the 17th century to protect Malta’s northern coast. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa, a revered pilgrimage site, draws visitors seeking spiritual solace and admiration for its ancient fresco.
Mellieħa is home to the Majjistral Nature and History Park, a protected area renowned for its rich variety of plants and wildlife, as well as picturesque hiking trails along rugged cliffs.
Mellieħa, like several other areas in Malta, has World War II air raid shelters. During the war, Malta was heavily bombed due to its strategic position, and many towns, including Mellieħa, built underground shelters to protect civilians from air raids. Some of these shelters still exist and can be visited today.
