Fun Facts You Might Not Know About: Dingli!
Local

Dingli is a small village on the western edge of Malta, and it might just be one of the most peaceful places on the whole island. Even though it is quiet and doesn’t have beaches or big buildings, it has something very special:  the Dingli Cliffs. These cliffs are the highest point in Malta, rising around 250 metres above sea level. From the edge, you can see endless blue sea and even tiny Filfla, an uninhabited rocky island just off the coast. Filfla is a bird sanctuary and no one is allowed to live or fish there. It is also home to a species of lizard that lives nowhere else in the world!

The cliffs are a popular spot for walks, especially at sunset when the sky turns orange and pink. There is also a small chapel nearby called St Mary Magdalene’s Chapel, which sits right near the cliff’s edge. It is one of the most photographed places in Dingli, and it has been watching over the sea for centuries.

Dingli is also known for farming. You will find fields full of vegetables, fruit trees and stone walls built by hand to keep the land in place. Local farmers still grow carrots, potatoes and onions that end up in shops and markets all over Malta. If you visit, you might spot a cart selling fresh produce right on the roadside.

The name “Dingli” is believed to come from a noble family called Dingli, who owned land in the area hundreds of years ago. The village is small, but it has a tight community and lots of traditions. Dingli celebrates its festa in honour of the Assumption of Our Lady every August, with colourful lights, music and fireworks that can even be seen from nearby towns.

Another fun fact: Dingli has one of the cleanest and greenest areas in Malta. It is close to Buskett Gardens, one of the few woodlands on the island, and to Clapham Junction, where you can see mysterious ancient cart ruts carved into the rock. No one knows exactly how or why they were made, but they are thousands of years old and still a mystery today.

So if you want big views, quiet walks, and a slice of real rural Malta, Dingli is the place. It may be small, but it is full of fresh air, natural beauty and ancient secrets.
