Located on the northeastern coast of Malta, Sliema is a town that masterfully blends history, seaside charm, and vibrant urban life. Once a quiet fishing village, it has grown into one of Malta’s most popular destinations, attracting both locals and visitors with its picturesque promenades, lively cafés, and architectural treasures.

The name “Sliema” derives from the Maltese word sliem, meaning “peace” or “comfort”.

The town is believed to have been named after a chapel dedicated to Our Lady, Star of the Sea a serene landmark that offered reassurance to seafarers navigating into Marsamxett Harbour.

Fatima House, a late 19th-century Palladian villa at 65 High Street, Sliema, features a detached garden layout, grand columns, and a flat roof, and was later donated to the Catholic Church to support women in need.

Another iconic landmark is the Balluta Buildings, designed by renowned architect Giuseppe Psaila in 1928. These striking structures combine Art Deco elements with Maltese Baroque influences, reflecting the eclectic architectural trends of early 20th-century Malta.

Beyond its historic streets and elegant villas, Sliema is also known for its Cat Park a charming spot where local cats roam freely and visitors can interact with them in a friendly, relaxed setting.
