A Town with Strong Walls
Floriana was built long ago, between 1634 and 1721, to protect Valletta from sneaky land attacks. It’s named after the clever Italian engineer Pietro Paolo Floriani who designed the fortifications called the “Floriana Lines.”Meet Saint Publius and the Big Church
Floriana’s parish church is named after Saint Publius, who is believed to have welcomed the Apostle Paul when he shipwrecked on Malta. The beautiful neoclassical St. Publius Church was started in 1733 and finished in stages up to the 20th century.
Fountains that Tell Stories
There’s a fountain in the town square called the Lion Fountain. Built in 1728, it has a statue of a lion holding a shield just like a brave guardian!
Another cooler sight is the Tritons’ Fountain that’s three sea-god figures holding up a big bowl. It’s one of Malta’s most famous modern artworks, made back in 1959!
Heroes, Festivals and Green Spaces
Floriana is the hometown of the man who wrote Malta’s national anthem, Robert Samut!
