Fried Egg Jellyfish Returns To Maltese Waters For Summer 2025

Environment
Taking to social media, marine biologist Alan Deidun shared a video sent to him of one of, if not the first fried egg jellyfish arriving in local waters.
The Cotylorhiza tuberculata was spotted at Ramla l-Ħamra, with the innocuous jellyfish making its first appearance in Maltese waters earlier each year.
This is because the warm sea temperatures it thrives upon are being reached earlier in the summer season.
This has earned it the name ‘tal-lampuki’, in reference to the dolphin fishery season. Another colloquial name for the species is ‘qassata’.
