Former Liverpool Youth Jake Brimmer Chooses to Represent Malta Over Australia

Former Liverpool academy midfielder Jake Brimmer has officially opted to represent Malta at international level, turning down hopes of playing for Australia.
The 27-year-old, currently a key player for Auckland FC, Australian league champions, previously spent two years at Liverpool’s youth academy (2015–2017), playing alongside stars like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, and Caoimhin Kelleher.
He was released in 2017 and has since continued his career in Australia.
Speaking on his decision, Brimmer said, “Growing up I always wanted to play for the Socceroos, but at 27 that chance may have passed. This gives me a new opportunity to play international football and be seen in Europe, possibly helping me return to play club football there.”
He explained that after discussions with his family, he felt this was the right time to make the switch.
Brimmer was first approached by the Malta Football Association after winning the Johnny Warren Medal, awarded to the best player in Australia’s A-League. At the time, he still hoped to be selected by Australia and declined.
Now, with no call-up in sight, he has committed to Malta, entering what he calls the prime years of his career.
Malta’s next match is on 4th September, away to Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier.
