Oct 22 2024 Share

This year, Floriana is celebrating its 300th anniversary with several special events organized by the Local Council. A highlight of the festivities is the inclusion of the Vilhena Cistern in the Ġenna ta’ Ġonna event, providing a rare opportunity for the public to explore this remarkable underground structure.

The Vilhena Cistern, built in the 18th century under Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena of the Order of St. John, is a historical water storage facility that forms part of a network designed to collect and store water.

This system was essential in addressing the island’s ongoing water scarcity, ensuring a stable supply for Floriana’s residents, a locality known for its strategic and defensive importance.

The event not only highlights the cistern’s historical significance but also celebrates Floriana’s rich heritage, showcasing the exceptional engineering achievements of the era.

By drawing attention to this important landmark, the celebrations foster a greater appreciation for the town’s storied past and its contributions to the region’s history.

The Malta Eurovision Song Contest will welcome back a live audience next year.

In 2024, winner Sarah Bonnici and the 11 other finalists performed without a live audience, with only the production crew present.

Performances were pre-recorded in a “live on tape” format, with each artist performing three times and selecting the best take for broadcast.

PBS has now published the 2025 contest regulations, confirming that both the semi-finals and final will be televised and include live performances before an audience.

The results will once again be determined by a combination of jury and public voting.

The 2025 semi-finals are set for February 4 and 6, followed by the final on February 8. Entries can be submitted from November 18 to 29, with the Eurovision Song Contest taking place in May in Basel, Switzerland.
