First Pro-Choice Speech At EU Parliament By Maltese MEP

Maltese MEP Cyrus Engerer has become the first to address the European Parliament with a pro-choice speech.

Cyrus recounted the anonymous stories of various young women whose lives were put at risk due to not being able to have an abortion or did so unsafely – and illegally.

One woman recounted how she could not get chemotherapy for cancer because she was pregnant, meaning that she would have had to sacrifice her life for the foetus’s life.

After other anecdotes, the MEP explained that if the women speak up they receive 3 years imprisonment for the crime of abortion.

‘500 women per year in my country have illegal, unsafe abortions at home alone’, said Engerer. ‘Bodily autonomy is fundamental for everyone’.

‘Today is the 14th of March 2024, and this is the first speech by a Maltese in this parliament in favour of choice for everyone’, finished the MEP.

Father & Son Graduate Together For A Second Time

In March 2024, Valletta witnessed the proud procession of nearly 1,500 PhD and Master’s graduands. Among them were father and son, Philip Mifsud and André Mifsud Kingswell, celebrating their second graduation together.

Having previously earned a Bachelor of Laws, they both achieved a Master’s in Advocacy. Despite a 28-year age gap and differing study styles, they peacefully attended lectures and studied together, strengthening their bond.

André reflected, “We would get on each other’s nerves, but we have both been blessed with patience, maybe more him with me, but we’ve always managed, and they were five of the most rewarding years of my life.”

Philip added, “That was one of the matters we took into consideration… I was concerned I would become a burden… but we discussed it thoroughly.”

Their journey taught them mutual understanding and the importance of perseverance. While they may not practice law together due to their differing professions, they share an interest in civil law.

Philip encourages lifelong learning, stating, “At first, you will see a steep mountain to climb… but the satisfaction of graduating and crossing the finish line far outweighs that.” Their story exemplifies familial support and the enduring pursuit of education.

1 In Every 5 Maltese Experienced Stalking

Shockingly, 20.4% of individuals aged 18 to 74 experienced stalking, with a higher rate among females (25.2%) compared to males (16.1%).

Notably, 3.3% of individuals endured stalking before the age of 15. Male perpetrators were responsible for stalking in 14.6% of cases, while 3.6% involved female perpetrators.

Alarmingly, 76.3% of stalking victims did not report their experiences to the Police. These findings underscore the prevalence of stalking and the reluctance of victims to report incidents, reflecting broader concerns regarding GBV.

The data, collected by the NSO, emphasizes the urgency for comprehensive measures to address stalking and GBV, ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals in Malta.

This data was collected by the NSO for the Survey on Safety and Well-Being, concerning Malta in 2022, mirroring the EU-Gender-Based Violence Survey (EU-GBV), to assess gender-based violence (GBV) prevalence and characteristics.
