The Vatican has released the first official photo of Pope Francis since his hospitalisation earlier this year.

The 88 year old pontiff could be seen celebrating Mass in his prayer room at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where he has been residing for the time being as he is cared for his ‘double pneumonia’.

‘ I would like to invite you, today, to join me in praising the Lord, who never abandons us and who, in times of sorrow, places people beside us who reflect a ray of His love. I thank you all for your prayers’, wrote the Church leader.

The Pope’s condition was deemed as no longer critical by Vatican sources, saying that ‘he is continuing with the prescribed therapies’ which include respiratory and physical therapy.

Celebrating 100 years Of Mellieha Parish Church Bells

Celebrating 100 years Of Mellieha Parish Church Bells
Mar 17 2025 Share

The set of five bells in the bell tower of the Mellieħa Parish Church is one of the most beautiful in Malta and Gozo.

Their history dates back to 1925 when the Mellieħa community, with the help of parish priest Dun Karlu Cortis, raised funds to order the bells from the renowned Italian company Barigozzi.

Once completed, the bells were shipped to Malta and transported to Mellieħa by cart, where they were placed in the church sacristy, marking a joyful moment for the community.

On March 25, 1925, the bells were blessed by Bishop Mons Mauro Caruana, with a special decoration set up in the churchyard. The event drew a large crowd, and when the large bell rang, the people cheered, with many removing their hats in respect.

In 2025, the bells are still heard, though they require people to ring them. To mark the centenary, a special Mass will be held on March 22, 2025, with all parish choirs participating, followed by an open day on March 22 and 23, allowing visitors to view the bells up close in the bell tower.

The celebrations will honour the 100-year history of the bells and their ongoing importance to the Mellieħa community.
