In a rare but heartwarming gesture, eternal rivals Ħamrun Spartans congratulated Valletta FC on their triumphant return to the Premier League, following the latter’s dominant campaign in the BOV Challenge League.

Valletta’s promotion marks a dramatic comeback after suffering relegation for the first time in their 120-year history. This season, the capital club bounced back with grit and style, sealing the title with games to spare.

Despite decades of fierce competition, Ħamrun Spartans took to social media to extend their respect:

“To our eternal rivals, with whom we’ve shared countless iconic moments in Maltese football — well done Valletta FC for earning promotion to where you truly belong. A fierce rivalry makes football great, and today, we tip our hats to your success.”

Valletta responded graciously:
“Thank you Ħamrun Spartans Football Club – see you soon on the pitch! Wishing you the best in your upcoming fixtures.”

Valletta FC President Claudio Grech also thanked Hamrun Spartans for their sportsmanship in a comment on Facebook.

University Of Malta Confirms Validity Of Roberta Metsola’s LL.D Degree

Apr 12 2025 Share

In a meeting held on 11th April 2025, the University of Malta Senate confirmed that the LL.D degree awarded to Roberta Metsola in 2003 remains valid. The Senate addressed allegations made by Stefan Weber, who had claimed that Metsola had plagiarised her dissertation.

The Senate clarified that Metsola, then known as Roberta Tedesco Triccas, had pursued a law degree, not a Ph.D., and was awarded the professional title of Doctor of Laws (LL.D). The university further stated that the dissertation contained no significant issues, aside from some minor citation errors, which were deemed unintentional.

Metsola, now President of the European Parliament, expressed relief that the University had upheld her degree and reiterated that there had been no misuse of the title “Doctor.” She acknowledged that, with 22 years of experience, she would have approached her dissertation differently, particularly in terms of referencing and citation methods. However, she defended the integrity of her work and rejected the allegations as politically motivated attacks on her reputation.

Environment Minister Miriam Dalli and Parliamentary Secretary for Public Cleanliness Glenn Bedingfield visited two green areas in Birgu this week, alongside representatives from the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation (GHRC), Ambjent Malta, and Birgu mayor John Boxall.

The first project launched the works on the former oil depot into a 1,500m² Mediterranean-style garden by GHRC. The new space will feature native plants, shaded picnic areas, winding gravel paths, and a 400m² open-air event arena.

The second project, led by Ambjent Malta, is located at the entrance to Birgu and involves a €230,000 investment. It includes soil restoration, soft landscaping, and the protection of historical underground shelters.

Minister Dalli said the government is taking a “holistic approach” to bring nature into people’s everyday lives, whether through large-scale regeneration or smaller local upgrades. “These projects are about creating spaces that are beautiful, accessible, and sustainable.”
