The Esplora Interactive Science Centre has introduced Sail to Science, a new transport service that links Sliema and Valletta directly to Bighi aboard traditional Maltese luzzu boats.

The initiative provides not only a quick and sustainable travel option but also turns the crossing itself into part of Esplora’s distinctive scientific experience.

The service will run with two daily trips during the week and four trips on weekends, allowing families, school groups and visitors to enjoy a direct crossing of the Grand Harbour.

Passengers will have the opportunity to admire panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the historic fortifications while travelling in an iconic luzzu.

At the launch, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti noted that the new route improves access to Esplora while promoting greener transport choices.

He emphasised that the government is committed to initiatives that inspire young people and visitors to engage with science and innovation.

Esplora Director Mary Ann Cauchi highlighted that the project builds on Esplora’s mission to make science accessible and memorable, while Science Malta Chief Executive Silvio Scerri underlined the role of cultural heritage in sparking scientific curiosity.

The launch event was held on the Esplora waterfront, where thirty Skolasajf students joined guests for the inaugural voyage from Valletta.

The public can now enjoy this unique journey that begins on the sea and ends in a world of discovery. More details are available at https://esplora.org.mt.
