In a thrilling friendly match at the National Stadium, Malta faced off against Slovenia, ultimately settling for a 2-2 draw.

Despite a shaky start that saw Slovenia take an early lead due to defensive errors, Malta bounced back in the second half. With increased pressure and determination, they turned the game around with goals from Matthew Guillaumier and Steve Pisani.

However, Slovenia’s Benjamin Sesko dashed Malta’s hopes of a victory with a brilliant equalizer. Despite this setback, Malta’s performance showcased their growth as a team in recent months, offering hope for the future.

Coach Michele Marcolini made strategic changes, bringing in players like Steve Pisani and Juan Corbalan to fill in for absentees.

Despite Slovenia’s dominance in parts of the game, Malta fought hard, creating chances and showing resilience. Ultimately, Sesko’s impressive strike ensured the match ended in a draw, but Malta’s spirited performance left fans proud and optimistic.

Myriam Spiteri Debono Could Become Malta’s Next President

Myriam Spiteri Debono Officially Sworn In As Malta's 11th President
Mar 22 2024 Share

Former speaker Myriam Spiteri Debono emerges as the leading candidate for Malta’s next President, according to sources from Times of Malta.

With a background as a notary and a history of involvement in Labour politics, she notably served as the first female speaker of parliament during the late 1990s.

Recognized for her moderate socialist beliefs, Spiteri Debono’s nomination by Prime Minister Robert Abela received no objections from opposition leader Bernard Grech.

The PN parliamentary group is expected to grant approval shortly. If confirmed, Spiteri Debono will assume office on April 4, succeeding George Vella.

In response to inquiries, Spiteri Debono emphasized the importance of an official announcement and parliamentary consensus. Despite previous nominations, such as for the Standards Commission job, she remains committed to her newfound presidential candidacy. Notably, she has garnered respect across party lines for her acknowledgment of pressing issues, including the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The nomination’s approval would conclude months of speculation regarding the presidency. Various other candidates, including European Commissioner Helena Dalli and current Speaker Anglu Farrugia, have been considered.

Constitutional amendments now require a two-thirds majority for presidential appointments, marking a significant change from previous procedures.
