EP President Roberta Metsola Welcomes Trump-Putin Summit

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has expressed gratitude to the European Union and U.S. President Donald Trump for their efforts during the Alaska summit.

“The way forward for Ukraine must be sustainable peace. The European Parliament welcomes President Trump’s engagement with European leaders ahead of Monday’s meeting with President Zelenskyy at the White House.

The goal is clear: lasting peace built on strong, credible security guarantees—for Ukraine and for Europe,” Metsola wrote on X.

The meeting took place on August 15, 2025, at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, where U.S. President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met to discuss a potential end to the war in Ukraine and the possibility of a ceasefire.

While both leaders described the talks as “productive,” the summit concluded without a ceasefire deal or any concrete agreements regarding Ukraine.

President Putin suggested that a follow-up meeting could take place in Moscow, a move that could prove controversial.
