The Malta Football Association (MFA) and Project Green have launched a new collaboration to encourage football clubs to implement environmentally friendly initiatives. These projects will focus on greening and beautifying football grounds, as well as introducing sustainable practices such as water conservation for irrigation.
During a formal signing event, Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research, and Innovation Clifton Grima, along with Minister for the Environment, Energy, and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli, announced the launch of the Green Goal scheme. With an investment of nearly €530,000 from Project Green, this agreement ensures collaboration between the MFA and Project Green for the next four years, providing football clubs across Malta and Gozo with opportunities to benefit from sustainability-driven improvements.
As part of the initiative, Project Green will also carry out beautification projects at the National Football Centre in Ta’ Qali and the Gozo Stadium. Minister Miriam Dalli highlighted the importance of such collaborations in improving recreational spaces while fostering a stronger connection between sports and the environment. Minister Clifton Grima emphasised the crucial role of sports clubs in Maltese and Gozitan society, stating that these organisations contribute to the holistic development of children and young people. He praised the initiative for enhancing both sports and community well-being.
Project Green CEO Joseph Cuschieri reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to community engagement and the regeneration of open spaces, ensuring greater accessibility for families. MFA President Bjorn Vassallo expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating that the Association is proud to be involved in projects that promote sustainability while benefiting football clubs across the country.
The Green Goal scheme will be managed by the MFA, and football clubs interested in applying can contact the Association at greengoal@mfa.com.mt.
