Evarist Bartolo warned the Labour Party (PL) leadership about internal members seeking personal gain, calling them the party’s worst enemies. He stated that while the PL has faced many external threats in its 103-year history, the most significant damage has come from within, by those using the party for personal enrichment.
Bartolo’s comments came after former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, ex-chief-of-staff Keith Schembri, and former minister Konrad Mizzi pleaded not guilty to bribery and corruption charges, along with 14 individuals and nine companies. Supporters of Muscat gathered outside the court in solidarity.
Bartolo expressed concern over the PL’s current direction, likening it to a ship caught in a storm due to internal conflicts. He criticized the lack of strong leadership needed to set a new course for the party and the country.
Although confident the PL will secure more votes than the opposition in upcoming elections, Bartolo warned of long-term problems, particularly the growing gap between the party and the post-secondary educated, higher-earning segments of society.
He urged the PL to address internal issues, including leadership and corruption, and to balance economic growth with sustainable infrastructure development to prevent further loss of support.
