People aged 60 and over who live in the local community may now benefit from free sessions in psychological support groups thanks to a collaboration between the Active Ageing and Community Care and SOS Malta.

The two groups, based in both Malta and Gozo, will serve as a pilot project signed off by Minister for Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela, who explained that the programme will be split into seven weekly sessions of one and a half hours each.

During these sessions, those present will be coordinate by a qualified psychologist to discuss various subjects including solitude, mourning, relationships, communication, psychological changes due to age, retirement, family changes and more.

These sessions will be financed by the Ministry for Active Ageing and Community Care, with those interested able to attend for free. Minister Abela stated that the ministry’s duty is not only to contribute to infrastructural projects and materials for the elderly but also provide emotional and psychological support.

Alessandro Del Piero, Cafu, Roberto Carlos and Marco Materazzi were amongst the line-up of football legends, who took on a team of Qatar workers in front of a crowd of over 5,400 friends and colleagues.

The workers contributed heavily to projects including the delivery of Qatar’s eight state-of-the-art stadiums, 42 training sites, community football programme and participation in the Workers’ Cup for all workers in Qatar.

Former England Captain John Terry praised the initiative, calling it “a great idea from FIFA to give back to some of the workers who have put so much hard work into the fantastic stadiums.”

Even FIFA President Gianni Infantino donned his own bright orange shirt as he served as a game referee, even giving out a yellow card at one point.
