Professor Edward Scicluna will resume his role as Governor of the Central Bank of Malta and as a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank, following a formal request made to Prime Minister Robert Abela and Finance Minister Clyde Caruana.

Prime Minister Abela consulted the European Central Bank, which, as an independent institution, raised no objection to Professor Scicluna’s return to his post.

This morning, the Prime Minister briefed Cabinet on the latest developments, confirming that Professor Scicluna’s request was favourably received.

In a statement, the Cabinet expressed its gratitude to Deputy Governor Alexander Demarco, who had assumed the role of Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Malta in recent months.

Professor Scicluna had temporarily stepped back from his role during ongoing legal proceedings but is now set to continue his duties at the helm of Malta’s top financial institution.

The Cabinet extended its best wishes to Professor Scicluna in the continuation of his public service, commending his loyalty and dedication in every position he has held in the interest of the country.

His reinstatement marks a return to continuity in Malta’s monetary leadership, ensuring the stability and integrity of the nation’s central banking operations.
