Ecological Restoration At Għammar Hill Set To Transform Ta’ Pinu Surroundings In Gozo

Work is underway on a major ecological restoration and rehabilitation project at Għammar Hill, overlooking the iconic Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary in Gozo.
Covering an area of approximately 8,467 square metres, this investment is designed to enhance biodiversity, preserve the rural landscape, and improve the visitor experience.
Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri, together with Minister for European Funds and Implementation of the Electoral Programme, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, recently visited the site to view progress.
Minister Camilleri explained that the project includes the planting of around 900 trees, 900 shrubs, and the construction of 1,700 cubic metres of rubble walls.
These interventions will not only enrich the ecological value of the area but also create a more welcoming environment for the thousands of pilgrims and tourists who visit Ta’ Pinu every year.
He highlighted that the initiative aligns with the Government’s Island of Villages strategy and the Vision for Gozo 2025, both of which aim to support sustainable growth and quality tourism.
Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi emphasised the importance of European funds in making projects like this possible, noting that the works provide tangible improvements to quality of life while protecting Gozo’s natural and cultural heritage.
The project also features a modern irrigation system to ensure plant care and the restoration of rubble walls using coral limestone, maintaining the traditional character of the site.
Ultimately, this ecological investment will safeguard Gozo’s unique identity while offering a more sustainable and enriching experience for residents and visitors alike.
