More than €61,000 has been raised to help 29-year-old Tonamol Baby, who has been in a coma for nearly three months following a road accident in Malta that also claimed the life of her unborn son.

The Indian national was five months pregnant when she was struck by a car on 16 July while crossing the road on her way to work. She has remained in the neurosurgical ward at Mater Dei Hospital ever since, after undergoing emergency brain surgery.

Her husband, Jacob Tom, launched the fundraising campaign to cover the €50,000 cost of taking her back to their home state of Kerala, India, where she can receive ongoing medical care and be surrounded by family.

The funds will go towards a €20,000 medical air ambulance and a further €30,000 for hospital and rehabilitation expenses.

Tonamol moved to Malta from India for work, where she was employed as a nurse at St Vincent de Paul Residence.

Since the accident, her husband has spent each day by her side before leaving for his evening shifts, hoping for signs of recovery.

Thanks to hundreds of donations, the fundraiser has already surpassed its target, giving the couple renewed hope for Tonamol’s treatment and eventual return home. You can donate here.
