Repubblika proposals suggest President should be elected by the people

Jan 13 2021 Share

Civil society NGO Repubblika has published a report in commemoration of Malta’s 100 years since its first parliament, presenting a number of parliamentary reforms.

One of the most bold proposals being that the President of Malta be elected by the people, who may be nominated by political parties but ultimately tarnish the idea of a widely-respected symbol of national unity yet respects the ‘democratic legitimacy of office.’

Other proposals include the full-time nature of MPs with professional salary compensation, MPs relinquishing of private work or consultancy during office and ministers giving up their seat in parliament, amongst others.
