Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness, Miriam Dalli Dalli, alongside the Parliamentary Secretariat for Youths, Research and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, has launched the sixth call under the Energy and Water Agency’s (EWA) Research and Innovation Scheme. This round offers €400,000 in funding to support Malta-based projects addressing urgent challenges in energy and water sectors.

Since its inception in 2020, the scheme has invested over €2 million in 15 collaborative research projects, spanning areas such as offshore renewable energy and innovative water-saving technologies.

Speaking at a launch event held at Abertax, Minister Miriam Dalli highlighted the scheme’s tangible benefits: “From improving tap water quality to pioneering new uses for electric vehicle batteries, this scheme empowers researchers to turn ideas into sustainable solutions. We are not just funding research but building Malta’s future resilience and competitiveness.”

The current call invites consortia of academic institutions, industry partners, and public sector bodies to submit projects within six priority areas: renewable energy, greywater reuse, efficient agricultural irrigation, smart leak detection, decarbonisation technologies in buildings, and more.

Parliamentary Secretary Keith Azzopardi Tanti added, “This scheme is a vital investment in Malta’s future innovators. By fostering collaboration and creativity, we are advancing sustainable development and long-term economic growth.”

The scheme forms part of the national RINEW Platform, which promotes cooperation across academia, industry, and public sectors.

Abertax, a longstanding partner in the initiative, showcased successful projects from previous calls, including ReUse which developed innovative methods to test and repurpose discarded EV batteries — and PvPro, a solar-powered water heating and energy management system, both in collaboration with the University of Malta.

Energy and Water Agency CEO Manuel Sapiano also confirmed that results from the fifth call will be announced shortly.

The sixth call remains open until 26 September 2025. Full details, including guidelines and eligibility, can be found on the Energy and Water Agency’s website. Prospective applicants may also contact the agency directly at rni-energywateragency@gov.mt.
