Work has begun on a €3 million project to connect Wied iż-Żurrieq to Malta’s national sewerage network for the first time.

The initiative, led by the Water Services Corporation, will provide residents and businesses with a reliable sewage system while safeguarding the surrounding environment.

Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli described the project as a long-overdue solution to a challenge faced by the community for decades.

“Wied iż-Żurrieq has never been connected to the national sewerage network. Through this €3 million investment, we are solving an existing problem while ensuring sustainable growth and environmental protection,” said Dali.

Karl Cilia, Water Services Corporation CEO,explained that the project involves laying new pipelines along a 2km stretch of road and installing two pumping stations to link Wied iż-Żurrieq to the main network in Żurrieq.

The first phase, expected to last around 10 weeks, will be completed before next summer.

The works will eliminate the need for private sewage pits currently used by households and businesses, improving quality of life and reducing environmental risks.

A traffic management plan will be introduced to minimise disruption as works progress in stages along the road.

This project forms part of a wider national programme to strengthen Malta’s sewerage infrastructure across Malta and Gozo, ensuring modern, sustainable services for local communities.
