A duck spotted wandering the streets of Qrendi at night has been safely rescued and rehomed, thanks to swift action by the Malta Ranger Unit.

The duck, later named Cecilia, was found early this morning swimming in the fountain at Ġnien tal-Warda playground. Severely malnourished and in poor health, Cecilia was in urgent need of care.

Thanks to a timely approval from the Il-Qrendi Local Council and investments in specialised rescue equipment, rangers were able to enter the pond and safely retrieve the duck.

A foster home had already been arranged, and Cecilia was immediately taken to her new home, where she is now recovering with plenty of food and care.

Taking to social media, earlier today, ‘The Exterminator’ Arnold Sciberras explained that he and other professionals working with him are noting a worrying amount of domesticated birds, from chickens to peacocks to ducks, being thrown out onto the streets.

He revealed that most of these birds either end up becoming feral and destroy several local ecosystems, whilst others who were domesticated suffer a distressing death.
