Drug & Alcohol Tests For Drivers Overdue, Says Momentum

Partit Momentum, has expressed full support for the call made by senior medical professionals at the Emergency Department of Mater Dei Hospital for the introduction of random drug and alcohol testing for motorists, without the need for reasonable suspicion.

The party described the measure as necessary and long overdue.

“Too many lives have been lost or shattered due to reckless driving,” Momentum stated. “Malta cannot afford to wait for the next preventable tragedy before taking action.”

The party emphasised that driving under the influence is not a private choice, but a public threat.

Random testing, they said, is not about punishment but about prevention, deterrence, and protecting innocent lives. International evidence shows that such measures have saved lives and improved road safety across Europe.

Momentum spokesperson Matthew Agius added: “Awareness alone is not enough. Parliament, enforcement agencies, and policymakers must step up and introduce a robust, fair, and transparent system of random roadside testing.”

The party is also calling for a shift in transport policy that places safety at its core. This includes infrastructure that calms traffic rather than encourages speed.

“Creating a culture of responsibility and accountability on our roads must become a national priority,” the party concluded.
