Fire in Mrieħel Business Centre Server Room Prompts Evacuation

Sep 16 2024 Share

A fire broke out in the server room of the Fort Business Centre in Mrieħel on Monday morning, leading to the evacuation of the building and nearby Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) offices. The fire occurred shortly before 9 a.m., prompting staff to be evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Firefighters quickly responded to the scene, extinguishing the blaze by 9:45 a.m. Staff were allowed to return to the building once the fire was under control. No injuries were reported during the incident.

While reports initially suggested that the nearby Quad complex was also affected, business activity there continued as usual. The MFSA building, although not directly impacted by the fire, was evacuated for safety reasons, with employees moved outdoors until the situation was resolved.

The Fort Business Centre is home to multiple companies, including gaming firm Evolution AB and accounting firm Grant Thornton. The cause of the fire, as well as details regarding which company’s server room was involved, remain unclear.

This marked the second fire incident in Malta that morning, following a car fire on the Marsa-Ħamrun bypass, which caused traffic disruptions.

In his first speech as Deputy Leader for Party Affairs of the Labour Party, Alex Agius Saliba reflected on the past 17 years within the Labour Party.

He shared that back in 2008, he promised himself to do everything possible to ensure that the Labour Party would remain the largest political force in Malta.

He emphasized looking back at the history of the Labour Party, which has always been a shield for the most vulnerable. This socialist principle, said Agius Saliba, must be kept alive.

He also called for open discussions and for opening the party’s doors, returning to the party’s roots, and building on the good foundations laid by previous leaders.
