Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg has announced that Malta will see its first direct flights to New York in June 2026.

Ian Borg announced the news in Birgu, saying that American tourists will soon be able to buy tickets for direct flights to Malta. In a video captioned he added, “After a lot of hard work, we have made it. Direct flights from New York to Malta from June!”

Dr Borg described the move as a “gamechanger” for the islands, confirming that Delta Air Lines will operate three weekly services between JFK Airport and Malta International Airport with a Boeing 767-300, running from June to October.

Deputy Prime Minister said, the route will open Malta to the North American market, attracting high-value cultural travellers and aligning with the National Tourism Strategy 2030 and Vision 2050.

The Malta Tourism Authority will also reallocate funding from summer music sponsorships to promote culture, heritage, religious and culinary tourism, strengthening Malta’s position as a premium destination.
